What is Clean Beauty:

What is Clean Beauty:

Clean beauty is a generally unregulated label, coined as a result to the limited regulation of the skincare industry by customers and companies seeking an alternative in the mass produced toxic chemical laden products on the market. In broad terms, clean beauty products are made without ingredients shown or suspected to harm the skin or you and your babies health.

At malo., clean beauty means consciously created, luxury formulas that never compromise you and your babies wellbeing.

We are committed to making safe, clean products that deliver tangible results, free of ingredients associated with harmful health effects like hormone disruption, cancer, and topical irritation. Beyond that, we care for the overall environment, prioritising ingredients that are ethically sourced, vegan, and cruelty-free; we use sustainable sources wherever possible such as extracts that do not require the whole plants to be processed. Further, we prioritise ingredients that are biodegradable, are non-persistent in the environment, and don’t have potential to accumulate in animals.

At malo., clean beauty also has to be luxurious, high performance, and but most importantly effective, whether it’s our award winning nappy rash spray that leaves your babies skin soft and free from irritation, or our silky super-seed belly oil that makes your tummy skin smooth and supple. There’s no compromise to be made — clean tech has become that good, so there’s even less of an excuse for mainstream beauty companies to keep making products with potentially detrimental ingredients.

While it’s hard to believe that mainstream beauty companies would ever include harmful ingredients that can include known carcinogens, irritants, and endocrine disruptors in their formulas, the fact is that they did and still do — it’s common practice and perfectly legal.

At malo., after a review of ingredients when formulating, our team of cosmetic chemists makes conservative assessments of the research. If we speculate (based on published or ongoing testing) that an ingredient could have a possibility for health risks, we avoid it and seek safer alternatives without making concessions for product performance.

We screen against non-vegan ingredients, formaldehyde donors, BHT/BHA, triclosan, hydroquinone, cyclotetrasiloxanes, benzophenone-3, polyacrylamides, ethanolamines, PFAS, parabens and others that were once used widely without known issues; today, research has shown that they can contribute to health and/or environmental consequences. So our approach — a proactive, forward-thinking consciousness about our health and the health of our planet—focusing on providing clean, conscious pregnancy and baby skincare you can trust.

Clean beauty detractors are quick to poke holes in misinformation about extensive banned ingredient list touted by some brands. Some of these lengthy banned lists include chemicals that have never been used in the beauty industry to begin with.

At malo., reviewing clean ingredients is less of a numbers game and more about risk and hazard analysis. Our cosmetic chemists scour regulations and available evidence before making a resolution about whether certain ingredients are not only acceptable due to our strict standards, are clinically effective but safe to be used on newborns so you can have peace of mind knowing we only formulate with the cream of the crop.
